Phyllis Palmer (Painting)

All my paintings and sculpture are in one way or another a celebration of our physical bodies. Each one of these figures is based on a drawing of friends who have patiently modeled for me over the years. Whether dancing, playing the flute, or dreaming in a hammock, these paintings and the sculpture can remind us of our best selves.

Resume

Phyllis Gay Palmer, in her eighth grade graduation yearbook, stated that she wanted to be a “good artist”. No women on either side of her parents’ families had gone to college but the men had gone to Harvard University. Fortunately her high school art teacher made sure she went to the Rhode Island School of Design.

Palmer graduated from RISD with honors in 1966, got married to another RISD painter and together joined the Peace Corps in Peru for two years. Upon return, they had two children, lived a rural life, and continued to paint.
In 1997 Palmer won a residency in Mexico through the Trust for Mexican-American Culture and in 2002 won a NYFA Painting Fellowship. Also in 2002 she won a George Sugarman Foundation Painting Grant, and in 2004 a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.

Palmer has shown her work in galleries since 1974. In spite of caring for older family members from 2012 to 2018 she has maintained her studio practice, her latest show being at the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson New York.
