BEN SHECTER

Biography

In Ben Shecter’s multi-faceted career, he has created sets, costumes and lighting design for the theatre, opera, ballet and television. Mr. Shecter is an award-winning author and illustrator of childrens’ books. He is listed in the “Who’s Who” of American authors and illustrators. He attended the Yale School of Drama where he was a theatre design major. He is a member of the United Scenic Artists.

Mr. Shecter’s theatrical work includes the original sets for Tennessee Williams’ The Milktrain Doesn’t Stop Here Any More, the world premiere production of Barefoot in the Park (with Elizabeth Ashley and Robert Redford), a national concert tour for Ethel Merman, and a comedy revue in Las Vegas for Shirley MacLaine.

As a young man, Mr. Shecter was fortunate to become an assistant to the director Franco Zefferelli, which was his introduction to the world of opera.

He later became the resident set and costume designer for the Washington Opera Society in Washington D.C. In the field of ballet, his sets and costumes for the Harkness Ballet Company’s Hearts, Meadows and Flags premiered at the Paris Opera House.

His film and television work as staff designer at CBS Television included dramas and musicals, as well as commercials for Polaroid, and Lenox China.

This is the first exhibit of Ben Shecter’s paintings, though his art work has been collected by numerous theatrical luminaries.
