Claire Lofrese currently lives and works near Beacon, NY. She has exhibited with Carrie Haddad Gallery on and off for the past 18 years. The gallery is quite pleased to exhibit her new work as well as some real gems from her earlier efforts.
The textured surfaces of her large, abstract paintings are richly layered with umber earth tones. Her interest in Japanese art is expressed in the long, narrow format of her canvases, which hang alone as scrolls, or in multiples, like screens. Lofrese was educated at SUNY Buffalo and Hunter College. She has exhibited in metropolitan New York, Canada and California.

I have been mining Giorgio Morandi’s work for several years, making small paintings on panel that include birch bark. I wanted to see these shapes as single shapes in the print format - without any foreground, background, or shadows. With a background that includes printmaking, I had the idea of creating the individual shapes as templates that could be used recto or verso to ink up and print. I’m attracted to the strong iconic nature of the shapes in black and white whereas the paintings explored the objects in the color and shadows of the environment.
The pieces on view are enlarged from the original prints made from these templates. Editions are based on enlargement size and the work shown is from the Morandi Series II Group.
Lofrese often pulls influences from different areas and eras, combining them in some fashion. In this series, the coloration or palette grew out of a definite desire to simulate the color and light of the old masters and Mannerist painters like Rembrandt , Caravaggio, Valesquez, and Zurburan. For Lofrese, this palette embodies a drama and elegance and an emergent quality caused by the use of darks. Hung as diptychs and triptychs, the paintings are reminiscent of Japanese screens where action spans panels.
