Jenny Kemp

In my work, I directly examine the elements of invention and surprise that result from working cyclically between painting and animation. Stemming from an inherent interest in organic form and contemplating on human beings and our relationship to organic matter, I create biologically-inspired imagery that is built through lines and planes of subtly shifting hue intensities, generating form through a slow additive process that parallels growth in nature. These become densely colored abstractions that become metaphorical of unseen phenomenon such as thoughts and feelings. I approach composition centrally on paper, creating bodies in space that are frontal to the viewer, exploring ways of yielding formal variety. I consider these bodies as presented cross-sections, revealing inner realms that are reminiscent of a variety of visual sources such as natural organisms, psychedelic patterning and early modern design.

My animations allow me a deeper perspective into these dissections as I capture macro shots of my paintings and manipulate them in Photoshop and into small stop-motion videos. These videos feed the paintings in terms of inventiveness and discovery into new territory and allow me to create conversations that address tensions between flatness/depth, containment/expansion, and handmade/digital.
