These pictures refer to the "initial glance"; how I see and interpret the transitory world we as we pass through time. Usually, they start with a vague image I have seen in my studio, and through various states and stages of drawing, in oil or chalk a framework is constructed into which I look for ways to insert the momentary imagery I remembered. They are gestural and indeed aggressive as they must fight hard to be recalled re assembled into an aesthetic whole.

I love the process of painting and the development of a tactile surface that counterbalances the idea of space but I do my best to keep the tension between idea and flat space on the edge.

Their antecedents are clear and though I have looked closely at Braque and Gris, of course, there are moments of Stuart Davis and Picasso, I have worked to keep the particular dialect of the visual language my own and I can also tip my hat to Marden and Still.

Art is like a Möbius strip as it rearranges and moves around on itself. We go for the ride!
