Artist Statement

"People You Know' is an ongoing series of portraits based on photographs that I find at yard sales, antiques shops, estate auctions and on ebay. I look for elements in the photographs that appeal to me; the figure, items in the background, a particular pattern or pose. These portraits are about the photographs that I choose and my connection to them.

In creating a painting, my intent is to capture an evocative feeling and an essence of the landscape that I feel a connection to. The spaces and scenes that I choose are usually rooted in reality, but I often alter composition, color and light to more accurately express my feelings about how and what I see. I also like to juxtapose bold colors and simple compositions with very subtle, delicate layers of color and bits of detail.

I truly appreciate the process of painting. I like the texture of the surfaces that I prepare, the color of the underpainting, the softness of a brush, the smell of the paint, medium and turpentine, and the excitement of laying down layer after layer of color.

Artist Bio

Tracy Helgeson was born in Minnesota, in 1964. She attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1983, majoring in Graphic Design. She also attended the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) where she studied illustration. Philadelphia was a great influence on Tracy and it was there that her work began to take on a unique style. She also learned the under painting skills and glazing techniques that distinguish her current work.

In 1988, she worked as graphic designer and also as a freelance illustrator. After living in Connecticut for two years, Tracy and her husband, Douglas Miller, moved to Utah and there Tracy decided to be a stay at home mom to their family which would soon include four children. In 1998, Tracy became involved in art again by serving as the Visual Arts Director and then as President of the Board of Directors at the Alliance for the Varied Arts in Logan, UT. She began painting and drawing and was soon participating in several local art shows.

In 2003, Tracy and her family moved to upstate New York. With the children in school, she has finally been able to devote more time and energy to her personal work. Tracy began painting landscapes, greatly inspired by the natural beauty surrounding the farmhouse where she lives and works.
